Both the title and the idea for this post came directly from a quote by Warren Buffets long time business partner Charlie Munger.
The whole quote reads as follows;
“To get what you want, you have to deserve what you want. The world is not yet a crazy enough place to reward a whole bunch of undeserving people.”
This quote has held extreme relevance in my life for literally decades;
In my 40 years of leadership I was often approached by eager people who said;
“Give me a promotion and I will prove myself,”
Despite the fact that the vast majority of the people honestly believed their own words my response was always the same;
“Prove that you are ready for a promotion in your current role and then, MAYBE, you will get a promotion.”
Millions of people want more from their lives;
They want more wealth, better health and more happiness. They want fancy cars and big houses, they want to go on expensive vacations and hang around with rich and famous people.
These people want everything that life has to offer but they have a huge problem.
They don’t realise that outcomes are almost always the result of effort.
Poor efforts usually result in poor results. Great results require great effort and I have never met a self-made person who was lazy.
Getting what you want in life is the simplest thing in the world.
You have to know what you want, you have to create a plan and then you have to work your ass off to make that plan work.
With effort, perseverance and just a little luck you can have everything you want in the world. You can have health, wealth and happiness but it will only come with hard work and planning.
Next time you are wondering why you don’t yet have everything you want in life remember Charlie Munger’s words;
“To get what you want you have to deserve what you want.”
Do you deserve the things you want out of life?
